About

Rock Garden Ceramics, based in York, is a sustainable pottery studio founded in 2019 by partners Zak and Lydia. Inspired by their shared passions for art, nature, and craftsmanship, the idea for the business grew during their early days together exploring the outdoors through hiking, camping, foraging, and rock climbing. Lydia’s journey into ceramics began after studying Fine Art degree in Vancouver, where she discovered her love for clay. Zak, an avid outdoorsman with a talent for woodwork, supported Lydia’s creative growth by building multiple garden studios from recycled materials as they honed their craft.

The name “Rock Garden” reflects their deep connection to nature, blending Zak’s climbing background with their mutual interest in gardening and sustainable living. Their studio prioritises eco-friendly practices, recycling all waste clay to create entirely new pieces. Today, Rock Garden Ceramics is renowned for its hand-thrown tableware, which has been featured on MasterChef: The Professionals, The Great British Menu, and in several Michelin-starred restaurants. They also craft sculptural vases and art pieces displayed in galleries across the UK. Lydia meticulously handcrafts each piece on the pottery wheel, while Zak enhances their creations with unique glazes made from foraged materials.

After years of growth and dedication, the couple now runs the studio full-time, passionately creating bespoke ceramics that celebrate authenticity, sustainability, and the beauty of locally crafted goods.
