Which Homeware Items Are Worth Investing In? Stylish, Sustainable, High-Quality Pieces To Elevate Your Home

3 Apr, 2025

Maybe you’re moving into a brand new home or perhaps you’re looking to upgrade your current space. Either way, knowing which homeware and furniture pieces to invest in when designing a room is tricky and something you want to get exactly right.

But how do you know which pieces are worth your time and hard-earned funds, and which aren’t? Allow us to lend a hand.

Opt For Timeless Designs (Sometimes)

When the temptation to splurge on that bright orange armchair gets all too much, ask yourself, will you really still love the colour in ten or even twenty years?

If the answer is yes and a vibrant shade of amber is your go-to colour of choice, by all means, buy the chair. Only you know when you truly adore a piece and will cherish it for decades to come. If, however, you’re getting caught up in the moment and know something a little more tame and timeless will serve you and your space better over time, invest your time and money into finding those classic items that will work in your home and with your sense of style for the long haul.

Of course, none of us knows for certain how we’ll feel about any one object years down the line. But, if you stay true to your sense of style, it’s much more likely your pieces will end up as family heirlooms rather than a regrettable purchase you’re trying to sell six months down the line.

Prioritise High-Quality Materials

We hardly need to say this, but before making any homeware purchase, always consider the materials and processes used to make the item.

A flat-pack MDF coffee table is obviously not going to serve you anywhere near as well as a hand-crafted oak, teak, or mahogany masterpiece will. So, for bigger purchases like these, we say it’s always worth going for the often pricier, but expertly made pieces. Not only will they still be standing long into the future, but they’ll also make your home look and feel undeniably more stylish and well-curated.

Source Sustainable Pieces

We’re firm believers in voting for change with our shopping habits. That’s why we’ll forever champion ethically made art, homeware, and furniture pieces over anything mass-produced.

In addition, sourcing your decor items in this way often means supporting smaller businesses and investing in pieces that are expertly crafted and made to last for decades. We don’t know about you, but knowing we’re backing talented creators and putting our money into pieces that don’t harm the earth or the people living on it means we can actually enjoy the things we surround ourselves with.

Which Homeware Items Are Worth Investing In?

If it’s sustainably made and built to last, we’d argue that any homeware item that brings you joy is worth investing in. Pieces that make you happy and your home a better place to be don’t always have to make sense or be an item you ‘needed’.

That said, when it does come to homeware and furniture investments, there are some items we think should always take financial priority.

Art

If there’s one homeware item we’d argue turns a house into a home, it’s artwork. Fully worth investing in, not just for yourself but for future generations, we believe it has the power to change not only a room but how you feel. If you find a piece you truly connect with, celebrate how rare that is by investing and bringing that piece into your home. If it brings you joy, it’s priceless.

Furniture

According to recent studies, the average person spends around 44 days per year sitting on their sofa. A rather depressing fact, but a fact nonetheless! With that in mind and the other slightly scary statistic that we spend around 26 years of our lives in bed, it’s safe to say that the beds and seating we buy for our home are some of the most important purchases we’ll ever make. So, beds and sofas? Definitely worth investing in top-quality items that not only look beautiful but are specifically made to support your physical health.

Additionally, it’s always worth investing in statement furniture pieces that define your style and capture the vibe you want to create throughout your home. Examples? A vintage teak sideboard for your bedroom, a farmhouse-style table and chair for the dining room, or a statement console table in the entryway that announces your unique sense of style from the moment you enter the home.

Statement Lighting

As any interior designer will tell you, a good decor scheme is all about the lighting. Natural sunlight takes priority of course, but when it comes to creating an ambience after dark, good lighting will bring your rooms to life with all the warmth and dimension you need.

For that reason, we highly recommend investing in high-quality lamps and overhead lighting. Whether it’s a simple table lamp for reading or a dramatic floor lamp to brighten up formerly dark corners, lighting is the lifeblood of your interiors. Not to mention, if you make a point to pick out handmade pieces crafted from sustainable materials, they’ll be staples of your home design for years and can even be passed down to future generations.

Antique Homeware & Furniture

One of our favourite ways to stay sustainable when shopping for new furniture and homeware pieces? Styling our spaces with unique vintage finds!

Pre-loved pieces are kinder to the planet and also give your home a much more eclectic and grounded sense of style - it’s a win-win. Not to mention, we adore the one-of-a-kind element that comes with antique homeware. Speaking of which…

One Off & Limited Editions

Acquiring one-off or limited edition pieces by your favourite artist, homeware designer, or furniture maker is like striking gold. If there’s ever a time or reason to invest in something new for your home it’s this! Pieces that feel unique and truly special to you will serve to make your decor style, and your home in general, feel like a deeply personal and eternally inviting space. Here at DesignSnitch, we love promoting those truly unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that capture and intuitively enhance the essence of a room.

Special Everyday Pieces

Whilst works of art and antique furniture are certainly worth your investment, we also believe in living for the smaller moments and romanticising life whenever you can. With that in mind, consider investing in pieces that elevate and celebrate the things you enjoy doing every day.

If you cherish sitting around the table for dinner with loved ones every evening, why not invest in some beautiful dishware? If the smell of fresh coffee gets you happily out of bed every morning, make sure you’re sipping it from a beautiful, hand-thrown mug in your favourite colour. We all have our priorities and rituals that bring us joy, so invest your energy (and money) into those little things that matter most to you.
